CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Have you ever had a really good hamburger? I mean a really good burger? And if you did, how much did you pay for it or how much would you pay for one? There's a Manhattan steakhouse that believes it's got the best burger on the planet, but it'll cost you, $41 in fact.
Our Jeanne Moos serves up the story.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A value meal it's not.
(on camera): One hamburger, 41 bucks.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wow!
MOOS (voice-over): This baby makes a Quarter Pounder look like a lightweight. It better for 41 bucks.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Does it come with a mortgage payment?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It should.
MOOS: No, but there's been plenty of interest paid.
(on camera): When's the last time you've heard of a hamburger in the gossip column?
AARON BROWN, CNN ANCHOR: Is it gold or is it ground beef?
MOOS: How can a hamburger be 41 bucks?
EDWARD GOZDZ, EXECUTIVE CHEF, OLD HOMESTEAD: Well, it's actually -- it's actually $40 for the meat and $1 for the bun.
(LAUGHTER)
MOOS (voice-over): No wonder the executive chef is jolly, the Old Homestead steakhouse has been doing a sizzling business in $41 burgers. One financial firm ordered 200 of them takeout.
GOZDZ: It's a very, very rich dish.
MOOS: And maybe you have to be rich to afford it. Think what you could get for 41 bucks at McDonald's.
(on camera): Yes, could I please have 41 Big and Tastys?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: How many?
MOOS (voice-over): But even 41 Big and Tastys can't make mincemeat of this meat.
GOZDZ: It's a lot whiter than chopped meat.
MOOS: Kobe beef is marbled with tasty streaks of fat compared to a regular steak.
(on camera): Do they actually massage the cow?
GOZDZ: Absolutely. They actually massage the outside of the cow so the fat goes through the animal.
MOOS (voice-over): Kobe beef originated in Japan, but this Kobe is produced here in the U.S. using the same high standards, fed only the finest grains.
GOZDZ: The cow drinks beer so it -- so it increases its appetite.
MOOS: And when you ply the cows with beer...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It saves us a step.
(LAUGHTER)
MOOS (on camera): Could there be a better burger?
GOZDZ: I don't think so.
MOOS: I mean to me it tastes like a really good hamburger.
(voice-over): But those with more discriminating talents were more enthusiastic.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Phenomenal meat.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It just melts in your mouth.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's worth it.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'll go back to dieting tomorrow.
MOOS: At least with this burger you don't have to ask...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Where's the beef?
MOOS: The question is where's the wallet?
Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
COSTELLO: Looks pretty tasty though, doesn't it?
