CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Let's rap now about the American Music Awards. I'm sure you were up last night.
CHAD MYERS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Oh, yes, I was.

COSTELLO: Yes, right.

Eminem upstaged the rest of the nominees at last night's awards show even though he was a no show.

CNN's Eric Horng runs down the list of winners.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ERIC HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Eminem, who had the top selling album of 2002, led the way with four American Music Awards, including favorite male artist in both the pop rock and hip hop/R&B categories. Eminem didn't attend the show, but his "8 Mile" costar Mehki Phifer accepted one of the trophies on the rapper's behalf.

MEHKI PHIFER, ACTOR: I'm right here at the podium right now. Hey, this is Eminem on the phone, y'all. Well, what up? What up? What up?

HORNG: The Dixie Chicks took home a pair of awards, favorite country album and band. And R&B star Ashanti made a couple trips to the winner's podium, grabbing favorite new artist in both the pop rock and hip hop/R&B categories.

ASHANTI, AMERICAN MUSIC AWARD WINNER: And I just want to say I love my family and everyone in here is just like family.

HORNG: Other winners included Creed for favorite pop rock group and alternative artist, Outcast for favorite hip hop/R&B group, Tim McGraw for male country artist and Sheryl Crow for favorite female pop rock artist. Crow wore a shirt that read "War Is Not The Answer."

SHERYL CROW, AMERICAN MUSIC AWARD WINNER: Peace, peace this year.

HORNG: But some of the show's most notable moments were provided by the emcees, the Osborns, who kept the censors on their toes.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She's not (OBSCENE WORD OMITTED) our daughter Kelly Osborn. (OBSCENE WORD OMITTED).

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think we can breathe now. I just love (OBSCENE WORD OMMITTED).

HORNG: Nominees were chosen based on record sales and winners were selected by a survey of 20,000 record buyers.
