HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, it's not the Oscars, but it certainly could be a preview of them. The Golden Globes were handed out last night in Los Angeles.
And our Eric Horng was there.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ERIC HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): "Chicago" danced away with a leading three Golden Globes, including best comedy or musical. "Chicago's" Rene Zellwegger and Richard Gere had reason to sing, winning top acting honors in the comedy musical category.

RICHARD GERE, ACTOR: I'm literally totally shocked. I don't win anything.

HORNG: Taking home the award for best drama, "The Hours." The film, which looks at the lives of three women living in different eras, also earned Nicole Kidman the best dramatic actress prize. Best actor in a drama went to Jack Nicholson, his sixth career Golden Globe, for his role as a depressed widower in "About Schmidt."

JACK NICHOLSON, ACTOR: I don't know whether to be happy or ashamed because I thought we made a comedy.

HORNG: Other winners included "Gangs of New York's" Martin Scorsese for best director, his first ever Golden Globe and "Adaptation's" Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep for best supporting actor and actress. On the television side, "The Shield" won best drama and star Michael Chiklis grabbed the best dramatic actor prize. The best comedy went to "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is a sad day for the Golden Globes.

HORNG: "Monk's" Tony Shalhoub won best comedic actor. "Friends'" Jennifer Aniston took home the award for best comedic actress and "The Sopranos" Edie Falco was honored with best dramatic actress, but had to whisper her acceptance speech.

EDIE FALCO: I can't talk. I have laryngitis, I swear to god. This is so funny.

HORNG (on camera): Overall, a very big night for HBO, the network coming away with a leading seven awards.

Eric Horng, CNN, Beverly Hills.
