DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: I want to go over who hit it and who didn't. And for that, we're going to want to bring in Tom Julian, fashion analyst, joining us from New York City.
Tom, good to see you again.

TOM JULIAN, FASHION ANALYST: I'm getting a lot of reports here in New York about a CNN reporter in a blue Calvin Klein spaghetti strap who was just the hit on the red carpet. Could that have been you?

KAGAN: Well, thank you. I was the only CNN reporter there, and I was wearing a Calvin Klein blue spaghetti strap.

JULIAN: Here we go, look at that, and a beautiful necklace to match, and some earrings.

KAGAN: Thank you. The folks at Calvin Klein and Fred Leyton (ph) pulled me together, that they did. A little bit of ice. Thank you.

Hardly the lead story, though. Let's go to the big stars.

JULIAN: All right.

KAGAN: Who do you think really did hit it, Tom?

JULIAN: Well, you know, Daryn, we had a lot in the way of big, vibrant fashion color, and if we think of the color red, we had from Selma Hayek to Kim Catrall. I think in a fashion story, though, a lot of people are going to go after Debra Messing.

KAGAN: Go after her in a good way.

Selma, I think, go ahead, she had two accessories there that you don't need jewels.

JULIAN: Exactly. They were wonderful sheathes to accentuate the body. Kim Catrall chose Valentino, an international look, and showing that middle-aged women can look great, too.

KAGAN: Yes, if that's what middle age looks like, I think that's OK.

Now, Debra Messing, was this a hit or miss for you, Tom?

JULIAN: You this was a hit, because this was a spring 2003 fashion look from Vera Wang. It's chiffon. It's fanciful, it's a little romanticism but it's still novelty and sexy, and it had some wonderful beading at the waistline and the beautiful neckline, as well.

KAGAN: Yes, you can't really tell but if you see it from the front cut, oh, my goodness, to the Mexican border, you might say, and cut very low, and Debra messing, of course, very into fashion and tries to be cutting edge. Talking to some of my girlfriends, some people liked it, some people didn't quite get it, but definitely in keeping with how she tries to be cutting edge.

JULIAN: She continues to make a good fashion statement on the red carpet.

KAGAN: What about Renee Zellweger? She likes to go retro, and it seems like she did that yet again last night.

JULIAN: She did. She always selects something very classic, but elegant with a twist, and this is a vintage piece from Valentino, and it was the only tea-length gown on your dress on the stage last night, and as an award winner, she really will go down as a fashion history fashion thumbs up.

KAGAN: Now, unfortunately for the women who hit it, the ones we ended up really talking about are the ones that you're, like, what were they thinking? And I only wish, Tom, you could have been there on the red carpet when some of these women showed up, because they were definitely jaw dropping, but not necessarily for the right reasons. Sharon Stone in Versace.

JULIAN: You know what, Daryn, you're the first one to tell us who that came from, Versace, because there's been a lot of talk. It was very unsuspecting Sharon Stone. She's normally glamorous and sophisticated. She went novelty, gimmicky. It's a little bit of a flapper's look with a dominatrix touch. It had the feather trim. It showed a lot of her body. Now, we respect her for having a wonderful body, but again, she's an actress of wonderful stature, and she almost went into that Cher zone of, you know what, what were they thinking?

KAGAN: And in terms of, what were they thinking, Lara Flynn Boyle? We couldn't even first tell who it was. To see her from the back, her hair is lighter. She's got the ponytail. Maybe it was Degas inspired, that's what I was thinking, that she was going for the ballerina look.

JULIAN: You know, Daryn, I heard she worked with the Los Angeles designer David Cardona (ph) for this look. It is a ballerina takeoff. It is pink. But I really think she did it to have some fun and put a spin on the red carpet, and she wasn't nominated, and she's a sexy girl, and she probably just wanted to come off as a sexy little ballerina.

KAGAN: So you see, she actually worked on this one? It wasn't an accident. She worked on it.

JULIAN: That's the reports from the West Coast, and this is what I've been checking all morning, yes.

KAGAN: She definitely has gotten the publicity from it. I just want to add two women I thought were really lovely and elegant. First of all, Jennifer Garner, who won last year for "Alias," in a Ralph Lauren black gown, just classic. She's a pretty girl, and really hit it. I don't know if her hair transfers on camera, but in person it was up. That necklace was really pretty, all these different sized pearls, and we're not really getting a good look at the dress, but just really classic and sexy, and I think she's a really pretty girl.

JULIAN: She and her husband seemed to represent the new Hollywood couple, sophisticated, glamorous, not too overdone, but very stylish, and she won an award last year, and she was up again, and I think she delivered fashion for an American designer, Ralph Lauren, rather well.

KAGAN: And real quickly, a woman who' showing you can have it going on, Kathy Bates, who she did a nude scene in the movie "About Schmidt" with Jack Nicholson. I thought she looked lovely last night. Her hair was done, and she had a nice suit on, and you know, it's a different look, of course, opposite ends of the spectrum. but I thought she looked lovely.

JULIAN: And I think there were a lot of middle aged women who came to the awards, looking fantastic and very fashionable, and Kathy represented that age group very well.

KAGAN: And she told me on the red carpet she's been getting a lot of positive feedback on that nude scene that she did with Jack Nicholson, so I say, you go girl, on the red carpet and in the hot tub with Jack Nicholson.

Thanks a lot for joining us.

JULIAN: Good to see you, Daryn.

KAGAN: Appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much, and thanks for the thumbs up. It's always a little kind of nerve wracking when you head out on the red carpet yourself.
