CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: You wouldn't buy a new pair of pants or shoes without trying them on, would you? Well, how about a new set of teeth.
Our Jeanne Moos has more on a way to take your new choppers out for a test drive.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Bad teeth? Gone are the days when you could just grin and bear it.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This band is for your bees.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: Toothpaste has given way to laser bleaching, white strips, whitening floss, even whitening gum. We're bombarded by supernaturally white choppers.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP FROM "THE MASK")

JIM CAREY: Smoking.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Put the sparkle back into your own smile.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: Surrounded by pearly whites on everyone from Vanna White to...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Our hero, Dudley Do Right.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: And to make sure you do right, there's something new.

(on camera): Trial smile.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Trial smile. MOOS (voice-over): She's wearing it.

DR. LANA ROZENBERG: So this is basically you're trying on your future smile.

MOOS: Dr. Lana Rozenberg calls her practice The Dental Day Spa. Patients often come in asking for a certain celebrity's smile and The Dental Day Spa is ready with a celebrity smile chart.

ROZENBERG: Probably Julia Roberts is one of the most requested smiles.

MOOS: Which one is Julia? There she is. Dr. Rozenberg says Julia's smile is natural. But if you need the kind of major work Angela Zucker (ph) needs, veneers that will cost more than 10,000 bucks, consider trying on custom made teeth that last only 48 hours.

(on camera): Are they going to like fall off in her soup or anything?

ROZENBERG: If you start eating with them. They're not holding onto anything.

MOOS (voice-over): The trial smile requires a mold of your mouth. The resulting form is filled with an acrylic mixture, which is pressed on top of your teeth. Zap it with light to harden it, remove the plastic form, fine tune the edges and then polish.

ROZENBERG: And we are done.

MOOS: With trial smile, you judge how your teeth will look before you get them permanently fixed.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I love it. It's beautiful.

MOOS: Of course, you can request changes.

(on camera): Because these look a little Chiclet.

(voice-over): Hey, if you're going to go Chiclets, might as well use the real thing. After you've tried on your trial smile for a few minutes or a few hours, the dentist removes it. One patient wore hers for a special occasion.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It was a date.

MOOS: Must have been some date. The trial smile costs from $300 to $600.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Like I would want these a little bit maybe more pointier so they'd look more...

ROZENBERG: Younger.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Younger and real, because I...

MOOS (on camera): You look younger with pointier teeth?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

ROZENBERG: Pointier teeth. You have, your cusps are...

MOOS: Give me that mirror.

(voice-over): Sharp canines mean you're young enough that you haven't yet ground them down. With the trial smile, you can put your money where your mouth is before you put even more money where your mouth is.

Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
