PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: It is very cold around the country, especially here in New York where the last time we looked it was nine degrees on the thermometer, well below that with the wind chill factor.
And Whitney Casey is the lucky woman who gets to be standing on the top deck of a tourist bus in Times Square -- good morning.

WHITNEY CASEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, freezing morning. You said nine degrees, but it's actually minus four with the wind chill so it's freezing out here. And it's the 10th day that it has been below freezing here in New York City.

We are on the top of one of these double-decker buses that roll through the city. And you know New Yorkers are tough in cold weather, but apparently, according to Gray Line buses, so are the tourists that come to New York because they get about a hundred people on here throughout the day and he says that even in this weather about 10 or 15 people will actually come up here and sit on these buses as they're touring through New York.

Now it is four degrees today right now with the wind chill factor. It's supposed to get up to 18, but that's still freezing even though it'll be sunny. And they said that they added these decks here. This is called -- this is like this vinyl coating here, it's the solarium deck. So it's quite the posh place to be.

Now this is really interesting. Listen to this, back in 1950 it was 72 degrees. That was the high. And the record low in 1882 was minus six. So I guess back in -- when it was 72 degrees, Paula, this would have been the Acapulco deck and not the solarium. Anyway, it's freezing out here today and it's only going to get colder for the rest of the week.

Paula, back to you.

ZAHN: Well I think you should just go inside the solarium...

CASEY: Yes.

ZAHN: ... and enjoy yourself -- Whitney.

CASEY: Sure.

ZAHN: Just warm yourself up a degree or two.

CASEY: Yes, it's... ZAHN: I don't think it's going to help all that much.

CASEY: No, it's only about like five degrees warmer in here.

ZAHN: Well have a very good time today.

CASEY: Sure, I'll see you later.
