FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Well new violence in the Middle East. Palestinians fired six rockets from Gaza into southern Israel this morning following an overnight raid by Israeli Apache helicopter gunships.
CNN's Matthew Chance joins us from Jerusalem with details on that -- Matthew.

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thanks, Fredricka.

And as you say, an upsurge of violence just four days before the people of Israel go to the polls in a general election.

Let's start in Hebron in the occupied West Bank where three Israeli soldiers have been killed by Palestinian gunmen. The Israeli army says the troops were ambushed at a road junction near the Jewish settlement of Bethagi (ph). Two Palestinian militant groups, Hamas and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, have said they carried out that attack in Gaza.

Israeli helicopter gunships have been striking at suspected Palestinian militant targets. The IDF, Israeli Defense Forces, saying they were striking at suspected bomb workshops in the territory, but local hospital officials say at least one Palestinian was injured in that.

Elsewhere, near Nablus in the north of the West Bank, Israeli Defense Forces say troops shot dead two Palestinians who attacked an army outpost in the area. Another person was arrested, they say. A fourth person was -- managed to escape, we're told by IDF officials. No independent verification of that account of events at this stage.

But all these incidents, Fredricka, really underlining why it is that security is far and beyond the most important issue in this election campaign for many Israelis.

Back to you.

WHITFIELD: All right. Matthew Chance from Jerusalem, thank you.
