CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Baghdad is likely to be keeping a close watch on this morning's events at the United Nations. The Iraqi foreign minister, as I said, held a news conference just about an hour ago.
CNN's Rym Brahimi joins us live from the Iraqi capital.

You were in the press conference, and you heard the foreign minister say that Iraq has been super-cooperating with inspectors.

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right, Carol, that was the word he used. He said in the past two months, we've allowed -- we've cooperated for the inspectors to carry out almost 500 inspections just in the space of two months. He said that's why in his view the U.S. threats were unjustified, and that's why in his view the United Nations Security Council should now be moving toward lifting the sanctions rather than allowing inspectors to continue, and especially the threats to continue. Now, he said that said that Iraq would continue its cooperation.

He also referred to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's statement in Davos, saying it was full of lies with regard to Iraq. The main lie, he said, being when Secretary Powell actually established a link between Iraq and terrorist organizations. The Iraqi foreign minister saying there was no such link between Iraq and any form of terrorism whatsoever, saying the world at large and especially the United States knew very well who was in charge in Iraq, and that there was no such thing.

And he did leave a door open to diplomacy as well, saying he would welcome any initiatives -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Rym Brahimi reporting live from Baghdad.
