CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Certainly no comfort for the Iraqis in the president's address. So, what are the Iraqis saying this morning?
We want to head to Baghdad now and our Rym Brahimi.

Any reaction yet -- Rym?

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, no official reaction yet, and the Iraqis, as you know, don't have access to satellite dishes. Those Iraqis who would have heard the speech would have heard it on international radio stations.

Now, I caught up with a few of them this morning. A lot of them wondering -- a lot of them who heard the speech wondering why this focus on Iraq? Why the focus on President Saddam Hussein? Saying, why is the U.S. afraid of us, they're such a big country, they're so powerful, they have all of the weapons in the world, and they're afraid of us here in Iraq?

Another issue, of course, that was brought up, this person I spoke to saying President Bush is offering to bring us food and medicine. Well, we don't want his food or medicine or anything else he has to offer.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We don't need anybody to give us our freedom. We must do it by ourself, not the others to give us the freedom.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRAHIMI: Now, this gentleman is a farmer. He owns a farm about a couple of hours' drive south of Baghdad. I asked him if he thought that by the speech he heard war was imminent. He said, well, every Iraqi knows war is coming, and there's nothing we can do about that -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Rym Brahimi reporting live from Baghdad this morning. Many thanks to you.
