Biotech Pigs Entered Food Supply

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Frying up some nice pork sausage this morning, well listen up, hundreds of experimental pigs that were supposed to have been destroyed may have entered the nation's food supply and it is a big concern for authorities.
Our medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen has details for you.
ELIZABETH COHEN, CNN MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: The FDA has announced that some pigs involved in a genetic engineering experiment were slaughtered and sent to market when they weren't supposed to be.
Let's take a look at exactly what happened. Mother pigs were genetically engineered at the University of Illinois to produce special milk. Three hundred and eighty-six piglets drank the milk, then were slaughtered and sold. The FDA says the meat won't make you sick.
Now the FDA is blaming the University of Illinois. The university says that the FDA knew they were slaughtering and selling the pigs and that they did nothing wrong. Critics say that this is proof that the FDA system to keep genetically altered foods out of the marketplace is failing.
