LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Today marks an emotional milestone in the search for Laci Peterson. The missing woman's baby was expected to be born today. Instead, the family today is still searching for answers and searching for Laci.
CNN's Rusty Dornin is in Modesto, California right now. She's got an update for us on the investigation.

What's the word, Rusty? Anything good to report this morning?

RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, nothing, Leon.

Anniversaries of missing persons cases are really tough on the family. And this one in particular, of course, because this date was really looked forward to with joyful anticipation by Laci Peterson and her family. She and her husband Scott, of course, were going to name their baby Conner. She had a nursery set up, all ready and waiting for that baby.

Even the community has really done a grassroots effort in this search and trying to get the word out. You can see even though Iraq and the shuttle dominated the headlines over the last week and a half, "The Modesto Bee" is back here, showing Laci Peterson right here in the headlines.

And to show you the grassroots effort, they're trying refocus the efforts to keep the search for Laci Peterson alive, over the weekend, hundreds of volunteers from the area fanned out along the canal areas, and these canals bring water to the farmers here in the central valley. They searched the fields. They searched wooded areas. The only thing apparently they came up with was a woman's dress, but it is in no way connected to Laci Peterson.

They've of course also put the word out to birthing clinics and hospitals statewide to be on the lookout for anyone in, of course, Laci Peterson's condition.

Now here at the Modesto Police Department, the investigation is ongoing. They've gotten over 5,000 tips so far, but no clue as the whereabouts, or what did happen to Laci Peterson. Scott Peterson is not a suspect. They say he is still just a person of interest. His movements are not restricted. In fact, apparently, he did go to Mexico last week on a business trip. He is a sales representative for a fertilizer company. But we understand that he has returned here to Modesto.

Meantime tonight, friends and family of Laci Peterson will gather together for a candlelight vigil to commemorate this very tough day -- Leon.

HARRIS: Oh, boy. Hearts go out to them. Thanks, Rusty. Rusty Dornin live from Modesto, California this morning.
