CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: In just over three hours from now, the Academy Award nominations will be announced in Los Angeles.
Our Daryn Kagan is covering the event, and she has a preview of the top contenders.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

NICOLE KIDMAN, ACTRESS: It is not! This is mine!

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: The tug-of-war at the Oscars could be between "The Hours" and "Chicago." Both appear certain to earn nominations for Best Picture. "Gangs of New York" also looks like a safe bet.

But the remaining slots are up for grabs, with "The Pianist" and "Lord of the Rings" sequel and "Far From Heaven" contending.

JULIANNE MOORE, ACTRESS: Nothing happened, nothing at all.

KAGAN: "Far From Heaven" could produce a nomination for Julianne Moore in a very competitive Best Actress race.

LEAH ROZEN, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: There were a bunch of fabulous performances by women, and there won't be room to recognize all of them in the five nominations.

KAGAN: Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman embraced at the Golden Globes, but they could be Oscar rivals. Zellweger could get a Best Actress nod for "Chicago;" Kidman for "The Hours."

Kidman's co-star, Meryl Streep, could receive a record-breaking 13th acting nomination.

Earning her first nomination would be "Unfaithful" Diane Lane,

Salma Hayek has an outside shot for "Frida."

NIA VARDALOS, "MY BIG, FAT GREEK WEDDING": We're (UNINTELLIGIBLE), are you kidding? Yes.

KAGAN: Nia Vardalos of "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding" might be a sentimental choice.

NICOLAS CAGE, ACTOR: I'm pathetic, I'm fat, I'm pathetic.

KAGAN: Nicolas Cage looks like a solid Best Actor candidate for "Adaptation." He'll likely face Jack Nicholson, the Golden Globe winner, of "About Schmidt."

Other contenders? Adrien Brody for "The Pianist," Michael Caine for "The Quiet American," and Daniel Day-Lewis for "Gangs of New York," "Chicago's" Richard Gere could squeeze into that category.

Long-shot Robin Williams of "One Hour Photo" has his own prediction.

ROBIN WILILAMS, ACTOR: I'm seeing Jack by a long shot, fighting it out with Daniel Day knives and spoons.

KAGAN: Among the other key stories, Roman Polanski. Will the long-time fugitive from "American Justice," coming from a statutory rape case, earn a Best Director nomination for "The Pianist?"

Will "Gangs of New York" director, Martin Scorsese, get another shot at a trophy? He's been nominated four times without a single win.

ROZEN: It's just a startling omission on Oscar's part. So, I think he is absolutely a shoe-in for a Best Director nomination.

KAGAN: The shoe-ins and those shooed out will be revealed at Academy headquarters in Beverly Hills.

Daryn Kagan, CNN, Hollywood.
