CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Let's talk more about the Oscars. As I said, we're just hours away from knowing who will vie for Oscar. It's nail-biting time in Hollywood.
CNN's Eric Horng is in Los Angeles with a look at the top contenders.

Good morning -- Eric.

You know, there never seems to be any surprises.

ERIC, HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, good morning.

Yes, certainly, it will be interesting to see actually the names and the nominees that come out, as you said, in about two hours. A lot of tossing and turning, I guess you could say, this morning here in Hollywood.

But, you know, even before those nominations come out, it seems like the Oscar race is really starting to take some shape. In one corner, you've got the Golden Globe Best Drama winner, which is "The Hours," and history has shown about 70 percent of the Golden Globe Best Drama winners have gone on to take Best Picture at the Oscars.

But in the other corner, you've got "Chicago," which seems to be generating a lot of the early buzz.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HORNG (voice-over): With three leading three Golden Globe wins, "Chicago" is virtually assured multiple Oscar nominations and a place on the Best Picture dance card.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They have brilliantly figured out in "Chicago," in both the direction and the screenplay, how to make a musical for contemporary audiences.

HORNG: Other Best Picture front runners include "The Hours," "The Pianist" and "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."

JACK NICHOLSON, ACTOR: I thought you might want these back.

HORNG: In the Best Actor race, Jack Nicholson will likely get a shot at his fourth Academy Award with his Golden Globe-winning performance in "About Schmidt." Other actors with a fighting chance include "Gangs of New York's" Daniel Day-Lewis...

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, ACTOR: Whoopsie (ph) daisy.

HORNG: ... and Richard Gere from "Chicago."

RICHARD GERE, ACTOR: I don't like to blow my own horn.

HORNG: "Chicago" co-star Rene Zellweger hopes to receive a Best Actress nod for the second year in a row, and "Unfaithful's" Diane Lane could be honored as well.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What was so rewarding about this job for me was that I got lost in my work. The acknowledgment of getting to a point of honesty in my work, that's the reward.

HORNG: Other favorites in the Best Actress derby include "Far From Heaven's" Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman and Meryl Street, both from "The Hours." Streep this year could break the record for the most career Oscar nominations. She and Katherine Hepburn are tied with 12 apiece.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

And this could also be the year Martin Scorsese finally takes home an Oscar, or expect a directing nomination at least for "Gangs of New York."

Carol -- back to you.

COSTELLO: Of course, we'll all be watching the fashions, too, Eric.

HORNG: Very much so. You know, this morning, I think Rene Zellweger may be presenting, so it will be interesting to see what she wears. But of course, you know, the fashion parade that the Oscars is, and it all begins today.

COSTELLO: All right, thanks -- Eric Horng reporting live from Los Angeles.
