PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's turn to movie critic Leah Rozen of "People" magazine. She joins us once again to give us an insider's perspective on some of the unhappy surprises, people who did not get nominated, got snubbed altogether.
Richard Gere, now this a guy who got a Golden Globe Award for his performance in "Chicago" and he's not even recognized. Why?

LEAH ROZEN, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: Not only that, but everyone else in the film got nominated. I mean, it won big nominations, best picture, best director, best actress, best supporting actress, two nominations, best supporter actor, one nomination, so...

ZAHN: What's that all about?

ROZEN: Well...

ZAHN: They don't like him.

ROZEN: He couldn't really sing or dance. He was certainly enthusiastic in it.

ZAHN: Couldn't sign or dance? He was just fine by me.

ROZEN: He was fun in it. He was certainly enthusiastic, but I think it's a strong year for men. It's a very, very strong year for male candidates, and he just got lost in the mix.

ZAHN: Who else got dissed this year?

ROZEN: I think would you have to think on supporting actress, Patricia Clarkson, who had won a lot of critics' awards for "Far From Heaven" isn't on that list. In supporting actor, Alfred Molina, who is in the Salma Hayek film "Frida," he didn't get nominated, and that's a performance a lot of people felt should be recognized.

ZAHN: Let's go back and review who did get nominated for best supporting actress. We're going to put that up on the screen now, Kathy Bates in "About Schmidt," Julianne Moore in "The Hours," Catherine Zeta-Jones, "Chicago," Queen Latifah, "Chicago." Do Catherine and Queen Latifah kind of cancel each other out here?

ROZEN: The question is whether they're going to cancel each other our. Was Catherine Zeta Jones really a supporting performance, or was a lead? The studio submitted her as supporting. Who thought Kathy Bates would get her nomination for best nude actress? That's just not where you ever saw her going. ZAHN: Best scene in the movie, I'll tell you that, the funniest one.

ROZEN: The really interesting one here is Julianne Moore, because she's up against herself. She's nominated for best actress in "Far From Heaven."

ZAHN: Does that hurt her, to have two nominations?

ROZEN: In some ways it does, although I think most are going to look at the "Far From Heaven" performance. I think that's by far the stronger performance, and that's the one she's going to get the most serious consideration.

ZAHN: You think that's her best shot, in that category. Let's go back to best supporting actor and review those nominations. Chris Cooper, Ed Harris, Paul Newman, Christopher Walken, John C. Reilly.

ROZEN: I think Paul Newman has to be the sentimental favorite.

ZAHN: He was great in "The Road to Perdition."

ROZEN: He's great in the movie, and you know, "Road to Perdition" really got dissed, speaking of films that got dissed. It got very few other nominations. So it's a way to vote for the film. People who liked the film, a way to show you liked the film. Also, most voting members academy are actors, you got to believe they're going to be behind him.

ZAHN: Also, I've heard a lot of good things about Christopher Walken. I haven't seen the role, but I heard that has a pretty good buzz among Academy members.

ROZEN: "Catch Me If You Can," yes, I think, again, you're looking at a guy who has a long career, and he has way to recognize, plus he's finally sympathetic in "Catch Me if You Can." It's such a non-Chris Walken kind of part that I think it might be recognized.

ZAHN: It is. Well, thank you for walking through all those nominations with us.

Leah Rozen, good to see you.
