LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Good morning, folks; Leon Harris here at the CNN World Headquarters in Atlanta. My partner, Daryn Kagan is out on assignment stuck in the snow this morning.
Now, if you're in the Mid-Atlantic or in the Northeast, you are in the No. 1 story of the day today. Look at this live picture we've got coming in here from New York City. That is what a blizzard looks like, folks.

Millions of people are struggling to cope with this -- the biggest winter storm of the season. And our correspondents are out in the middle of all this mess with stories of the storm from New York, Washington, and beyond.

Blizzard warnings in New York City this morning, as you saw there -- a foot of snow on the ground already -- more coming down. Forecasters say another foot may be there on the ground today.

Our Jason Carroll is standing by. He's at Columbus Circle, which is in the heart of Manhattan, over by Central Park. And Jason, it's looking kind of nasty out there this morning.

JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, and it feels kind of nasty, too. We're standing right in front of Central Park. That's what you see right behind me -- 12 inches of snow have fallen so far. Unfortunately, if you happen to be right over here where the snowplow came through, if you try to dig through here -- try to get to a car -- boy, that's going to be somewhat of an effort.

But look what I have here. My photographer, Rob, gave me some snow shoes -- he hooked me up with that to help me out throughout the day, so hopefully I'll be all right as I walk you through the story here.

You can see right now New York City is under what we call a blizzard warning. Take a look up -- you can see the reason why -- near white-out conditions here in New York City -- wind gusts up to 35 miles an hour, whipping through at various points.

In fact, right before the live shot, usually this area of Columbus Circle here would be filled with cars. Even if it was a holiday like today, you would have a number of cars out here; but look at it today -- practically a ghost town. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) to walk through, or at least try to walk through this area of the city here, simply because a lot of people took the advice of meteorologists and decided to stay off of the roads -- definitely some good advice there.

We're expecting anywhere between 18 and 24 inches of snow to fall here in New York City -- the worst of it expected to happen just about now and throughout the early morning. Things are expected to taper off sometime late this afternoon; and early this evening, we're all going to be waiting around for that to happen.

In the meantime, we're just all in New York City doing the very best we can as the blizzard continues to blow through here -- Leon.

HARRIS: Boy oh boy, that snow is bad enough; but, Jason, what's the temperature feel like?

CARROLL: Temperature? About 20 degrees, but with wind chill it dips way below that -- way below that.

HARRIS: Yes, and from what we saw with the picture we had a moment ago, that wind really is whipping around there.

All right, buddy, be careful out there; and you know, thanks for giving us something we never see on this network -- a brother in snow shoes -- all right. Take care.

Jason Carroll, out there by Central Park in New York this morning. Boy oh boy, what a mess you folks have got up there.
