CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: For thousands of airline passengers, today should see slow recovery in the Northeast as major airports clear the runways and try to move out a two-day backlog of travelers.
With the latest on the situation at Washington's Reagan National Airport, let's go to CNN's Bob Franken.

Hi -- Bob. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) behind you.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Carol. Yes, and you talked about the slow recovery a moment ago. Well, you are witnessing over my shoulder the slow recovery.

And you spoke a moment ago about the misery that is accompanying air travel right now. Well, if you look in back of me, you will see the misery, and the fact that misery loves company, and there is plenty of company. Just huge lines now. There's a pent-up demand, of course, for air travel. Only about half the planes are getting out of here even with the opening of this airport, if even half.

The other regional airports are experiencing similar kinds of backlogs. People standing in line. They've been waiting sometimes for days for the snow to get them to this point. So, now they're in these miserable lines, and they're not, for the most part, not happy campers.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You were having fun.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, I was in the snow, but not here in the airport just waiting.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Looking forward to a 16-hour drive to Florida if we don't get on an airplane. That's why he's not having fun.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We might have to rent a car and drive. We're from West Palm, Florida. And that's my tail of woe.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, this looks as close to Cancun as I'm going to get today, so hopefully this will keep me in the mood in case the does plane takes off.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, I like the snow because I get to miss school and sometimes I just like it.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FRANKEN: So, if you are going to school and you don't have to, it's a good thing. If you're not going to school and you have to get to work or get back home and you haven't been able to, it's not a good thing. It's a slightly better thing, but it's still kind of a mess here, and this is one of the better places now -- Carol.

LIN: Well, there you go. It's just a messy thing, Bob, isn't it? All right, thanks so much -- Bob Franken at Reagan National.
