PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: More now on that deadly subway fire in South Korea. At least 50 dead, and authorities fear that the death toll could go even higher.
It happened early today in the southern city of Daegu. Arson is suspected.

Sohn Jie-Ae joins us now on the telephone with the very latest.

Good morning.

SOHN JIE-AE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Paula.

We're here in the city of Daegu, which is still in a shock of disbelief and grieving over the people that have died in the early morning subway incident.

The latest total that we've gotten from authorities here say that the number of deaths has claimed to 49 at the moment, the number of injured is 135, and the number of missing is 160. Now, the number of missing has been climbing steadily all day today, and 160 is an enormous number. We started with something like 30-40, and now we're getting to 160.

Authorities here fear that many of those people missing will be in the end accounted as the casualties of this morning's deadly subway incident -- Paula.

ZAHN: Boy, the cars are almost unrecognizable.

Sohn Jie-Ae, we'll be checking in with you throughout the morning as more details become available. Thanks so much.
