CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: More now on our top story. The Israeli military hits targets in Gaza, killing at least 11 Palestinians. The action comes less than a day after a suicide attack killed 15 Israelis.
Mike Hanna joins us live from Jerusalem with more.

Hello -- Mike.

MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF: Hello, Carol.

Well, this operation in Gaza in the early hours of the morning, the latest in this series of Israeli military actions in that area. Israel has been conducting military operations there for well over a month, and in the last month alone, over 70 Palestinians have been killed in these operations.

In this morning's Israeli action, 11 Palestinians killed, well over 100 wounded.

Now, according to Palestinian eyewitnesses, eight of those killed were struck by a tank shell. They say that the Palestinians killed by this tank shell were unarmed bystanders who had gathered to watch civil defense units fight -- fire.

The Israeli Defense Force says that it fired three tank shells during the operation at armed groups of Palestinians. The last one in particular, it says, was fired towards a crowd in the middle of which was a man carrying an RPG rocket launcher.

So, a claim and a counterclaim in terms of the incidents surrounding this Israeli operation, but 11 Palestinians killed, over 100 wounded.

This, in turn, comes a day after a suicide bomb attack in the northern Israeli city of Haifa in which 15 Israelis were killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber. This is the first such attack within Israel in two months.

Palestinians insist that the ongoing Israeli operations in Gaza and the West Bank are fermenting and encouraging such terror attacks within Israel. Israel continues to maintain that it needs to carry out these military operations in order to prevent more such attacks from taking place -- Carol.
