CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Politics is the big buzz in the Granite State this Monday morning. There is a challenge to New Hampshire's first in the nation primary status.
Mark Ericson and Danielle Carrier, better known as the WOKQ Waking Crew in Portsmouth and Manchester, New Hampshire, on the phone with us now -- good morning.

MARK ERICSON, WOKQ WAKING CREW, PORTSMOUTH AND MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Good morning, Carol.

DANIELLE CARRIER, WOKQ WAKING CREW, PORTSMOUTH AND MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Morning.

COSTELLO: It's nice to talk to you guys.

ERICSON: How are you?

COSTELLO: I'm just fine. You know this is kind of like history changing, isn't it?

ERICSON: Well, you know, it's been a piece of history for a very long time. New Hampshire's status as first in the nation primary, it gets us -- well it gets us a fair amount of media attention. Certainly it brings a fair amount of money into the state as every presidential candidate, small, medium and large, if you will, comes through the state with their entourage and their buses, and of course all the media attention that that brings. And for actually quite a while, the state of New Hampshire did OK in picking presidents up until the Clinton era, basically.

CARRIER: Well, yes, we had like a 50-year perfect track record for them until Clinton, which was in 1992. Darn Clinton.

COSTELLO: I don't know, it was a tough election to predict, wasn't it, because...

CARRIER: Really.

COSTELLO: ... he just came out of nowhere. He just came out of nowhere. Well I guess the Democrats chose poorly then, you know, to place its convention right down the road from you guys?

ERICSON: Well the Democratic Convention is going to be happening in Boston and the Democratic National Committee has got a couple of problems. Democrats in Michigan would like to perhaps beat New Hampshire to the punch and the District of Columbia is also talking about beating New Hampshire to the punch. Now whether or not these become real primaries or they're just caucuses or non-binding primaries still remains to be seen. There's some argument within the Democratic National Committee. And again, yes, their big convention is going to be just down the road in Boston this year.

COSTELLO: Yes. Hey, is this more than just a pride thing?

ERICSON: Well, you know it's tradition, I think, more than anything else. And in politics there's still, certainly in this day and age, a big nod to tradition. Tiny Dicksville Notch, which is -- your building, Carol, is bigger than the town of Dicksville Notch. Dicksville Notch has always had the status of first in the nation. There's actually a special room called the Ballot Room at a resort hotel in Dicksville Notch and that tradition has gone on for many, many years. And it would be a shame to see that busted up.

CARRIER: It's full of a lot of history and you'd hate to see that come to an end.

COSTELLO: Yes, but you know things just change. That's just life. But we'll see what happens.

Mark and Danielle, thanks for joining us this morning on DAYBREAK.
