HOLLY FIRFER, CNN ANCHOR: Secretary of State Colin Powell paused from diplomacy on Iraq to criticize the Palestinians. He says their attacks on Israel and their lack of initiatives are why there is no progress toward peace.
There was a new round of violence in the region today, and we go right now to Jerusalem bureau chief Mike Hanna for the details.

Good morning -- Mike.

MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Holly.

Well, ongoing operations by the Israeli military in the West Bank, in the early hours of the morning they entered the West Bank city of Jenin, a refugee camp in that city. They said they were on the hunt for wanted militants. They came under fire, responded, returned fire. At least five Palestinians were killed in that Israeli operation, a number of them said to be members of the militant Islamic Jihad organization.

Earlier, late Thursday night, another Israeli operation; this time near the West Bank city of Nablus. There, Israeli forces entered the village, once again saying they were seeking known militants. They killed at least five Palestinians in that operation. The dead Palestinians said to be members of the militant Hamas organization.

Ongoing operations by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, and in one of these operations Thursday, two Israeli civilians were killed by mistake. Israeli forces opened fire on two people they believed were armed militants. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) they were in fact Israeli security guards; and much criticism in the Israeli media in the course of the day of this Israeli military action, and questions being asked, too, about the regulations that permit Israeli soldiers to open fire without sufficiently identifying the individuals whom they are firing at -- Holly.

FIRFER: OK, Mike Hanna in Jerusalem -- thank you.
