HOLLY FIRFER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Time for Dollars and Deals. And if your mailbox is over stuffed with credit card offers, coupons, endless ads, our consumer guru Clark Howard is here to cure the junk mail blues.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CLARK HOWARD, CONSUMER ADVOCATE: Today's question comes from Pamela in Long Island, New York. Pamela, you want to stop all that junk mail that floods your mailbox every day. And you also want to know how does everybody snoop around and get your address?

There are public databases everywhere where people are getting your address. That is hard to do anything about.

But you can stop most junk mail that comes your way. Two major kinds you can stop. One, all the pre-approved credit card junk that comes in the mail, you can stop that with one easy phone call, 1-888- 5OPT-OUT.

The second thing, you want to stop junk mail coming into your mailbox, you can stop about two thirds of the junk mail that comes to your home by writing the Direct Marketing Association. There's a special address you rewrite them in Farmingdale, New York, and when you write them, they will shut down your junk mail for five years. Now, that's only from legitimate direct mail marketeers, and they represent about two thirds of the stuff that shows up in your box. So that'll make a big difference for you.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

FIRFER: Sign me up.
