PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: For more on Saddam's speech now, we travel to Amman, Jordan. Our Rym Brahimi stands by there.
Rym -- what have you learned?

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Paula, that speech clearly addressed a variety of audiences. One, the international community, President Saddam Hussein saying that Iraq has tried, has been patient, has shown goodwill, but now it's being attacked. Secondly, to the region, the Arab world, the Muslim world in particular, saying that this is a battle of believers.

Let's listen in.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PRES. SADDAM HUSSEIN, IRAQ (through translator): The victory is soon. These decisive days for you Iraqis are in line with what God has ordered you, to cut their throats. And those who are the believers will be victorious.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRAHIMI: Appearing to (AUDIO GAP).

ZAHN: We've just lost Rym Brahimi.

I wanted to share with you what the British defense secretary is saying about parts of the tape you've just heard. He has just told reporters he does not believe it was done live. He said, obviously analysis continues. Those pictures, in his words, "were not live."

Meanwhile, the U.S. is trying to independently confirm when that tape was done, and whether indeed that was Saddam Hussein that delivered the message.
