CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Events are moving quickly on several fronts. Renay San Miguel from our military desk has a recap of the past few hours for you.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): 8:57 p.m. Eastern Time, CNN confirms a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter was shot down by small arms fire in south central Iraq on Wednesday. Early reports are unclear on how many soldiers were on board and what happened to them.

11:40 p.m., U.S. Central Command confirms a U.S. Navy FA-18C Hornet is down inside Iraq. CNN's Becky Diamond, embedded on the USS Kitty Hawk where the plane is based, says anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missile batteries have been seen in the area where the single-seat plane went down. A search and rescue mission is under way.

11:50 p.m. Eastern, 8:50 a.m. in Iraq, CNN's Martin Savidge, traveling with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, reports U.S. troops now hold the Numaniya air base. He says coalition aircraft have already started using the base about 85 miles south of Baghdad.

2:26 a.m., Reuters sends out Iraqi TV video of wreckage. The state-run Iraqi network claims the video shows an enemy plane shot down near Basra but gives no information on when the pictures were taken.

2:29 a.m., reporter Richard Gaisford, embedded with the British troops, reports Iraqi forces retreating from Basra are setting oil trenches on fire. British engineers are working to put out the fires.

4:11 a.m., CNN's Chris Plante reports from the Pentagon that it appears U.S. forces are within five to six miles of the outskirts of Baghdad. Intelligence sources say the Iraqi Republican Guard is redeploying, but it's not clear whether the troops are moving into the capital or away from it.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Renay San Miguel bringing us the very latest for the past several hours.
