Kurdish Fighters Reclaim Town

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Northern Iraq quickly now, Jane Arraf by telephone is moving yet again toward the south, I believe. She was in Kalak; now moving toward Mosul, I believe.
Give us the geography, Jane, and what's happening.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: (AUDIO GAP) and it fell just about an hour ago to Peshmerga, those Kurdish guerrilla forces, backed by the U.S. calling in airstrikes from their fighter planes.

Now, this town now we've seen some spectacular scenes, Peshmerga fighters ripping up posters of Saddam Hussein from the local guardhouse, as well as just down the road from us there is a burned- out truck hit by Peshmerga soldiers.

All in all, this has been a day of sort of spectacular fighting in the slow and steady battle for this town. It contains a bridge, a bridge across the (AUDIO GAP). Now, we're still about 40 kilometers, 25 miles, from Mosul...

HEMMER: All right, listen, having a bit of a difficulty picking up the cell phone signal or the satellite phone from Jane Arraf. She is traveling south toward Mosul.

When we can get back to Jane, we certainly will.
