DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Iraqi television was a focus of world attention and some Iraqi troops switched sides. Our Renay San Miguel has those events and others in today's summary of news from Iraq.

RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): 10:25 a.m. in the East, Saddam Hussein addressed the Iraqi people. In his talk, he mentioned events that occurred after the strike aimed at killing him. U.S. intelligence sources say this is the strongest evidence he survived the attack on March 19.

1:19 p.m., CNN's Wolf Blitzer reports that big explosions and anti-aircraft fire is heard in Baghdad and that according to Reuters, the presidential conflicts in the central part of the city has been hit.

1:30 p.m., at the Pentagon, Spokeswoman Tori Clarke mourns the loss of "Washington Post" columnist Michael Kelly. Kelly is the first American journalist to die covering the war in Iraq. Initial reports suggest Kelly was killed in a Humvee accident.

3:10 p.m., CNN's Harris Whitbeck reports that the Army has set up a chemical and biological decontamination unit at the air base in southern Iraq that was taken by coalition forces just days ago.

5:03 p.m., CNN's Nic Robertson reports that a source inside Baghdad tells him that the lights are back on in parts of the city.

5:25 p.m., Jason Bellini reports that in the city of Nasiriya, there is cooperation between U.S. special forces and armed former Iraqi soldiers. U.S. forces are calling these Iraqi soldiers freedom fighters.
