DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Here's Renay San Miguel now with a look at the overnight developments in the war in Iraq.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): 12:25 a.m. Eastern, 8:25 in the Gulf, a stream of hundreds of disarmed Iraqi soldiers walk south from northern Iraq toward Baghdad. Some of the men tell CNN's Brent Sadler they or their commanders had surrendered. Others told him they had simply walked away from their positions.

1:18 a.m. Eastern, CNN's Martin Savidge reports a sense of lawlessness in Baghdad, looting continues, most stores remain closed and U.S. Marines are trying to dispose of weaponry left behind by Iraqi forces.

2:33 a.m., CNN's Ben Wedeman reports from Kirkuk that U.S. forces are moving into the northern Iraqi city in greater numbers after the city fell to Kurdish fighters yesterday. U.S. troops are also working to secure oil fields around Kirkuk.

3:38 a.m., chaos and looting in Mosul. As CNN's Jane Arraf reports, there appears to be no one in charge. No soldiers from the Iraqi regime or the coalition seem to be present in Iraq's third largest city.

4:00 a.m., U.S. Marines report they shot and killed two children at a checkpoint in Nasiriya when the vehicle in which the children were traveling ignored warnings to stop.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: Let's take a look now at the latest casualty figures. U.S. and British officials now say 136 coalition troops have died in Operation Iraqi Freedom, 105 of those are U.S. service members, 93 were killed in hostile fire, 12 in non-combat situations, 7 U.S. service members are now listed as POWs.

Thirty-one British troops have been killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom, 9 in hostile fire, 20 in non-hostile situations and 2 are still being investigated. The British have no known POWs.

The Iraqi government has not released information on military losses, but Abu Dhabi television quotes Iraqi sources saying there have been at least 1,252 civilians killed and 5,103 injured.

U.S. Central Command says there are more than 7,000 Iraqi POWs. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
