CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The San Francisco Bay area -- in the San Francisco Bay area, investigators are attempting to learn if the bodies of a woman and a baby are Laci Petersen and her son. It is a wait that will take days and possibly weeks more.
Ethan Harp of CNN affiliate KCRA tells us about that.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KIM PETERSEN, FAMILY SPOKESWOMAN: Obviously, as you can understand, this is a very difficult time for our family as we await the results of the DNA testing.

ETHAN HARP, KCRA-TV REPORTER (voice-over): Family spokesperson Kim Petersen reads a statement from Laci's family, the first words they have shared since the unsettling developments at the Richmond Marina.

PETERSEN: These past three-and-a-half months have been a constant nightmare for us. From the beginning, we have done all we can to find Laci and will continue to do so until she's found, but this waiting is the worst.

HARP: Waiting that was not helped by announcements in Contra Costa County and here at the Modesto Police Department that it will take DNA, and with that, a wait of days, weeks or even months to determine if the search for Laci and her unborn son, Connor, is over.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Until the identities of the bodies have been made and they are connected to the Laci Petersen case, the Bay area law enforcement agencies will remain with jurisdiction.

PETERSEN: To us, they could potentially be our daughter and grandson, our sister and nephew, loving members of our family or possibly someone else's family who's experiencing our same pain. We believe that if this is Laci, God has allowed her to be found because our family needs to know where she is and what has happened to her.

HARP: Along with thanking volunteers and asking for privacy, the Rocha family statement turned toward a potential killer.

PETERSEN: If this turns out to be Laci, we want the animal responsible for this heinous act to pay. We will do all we can to pursue justice for Laci and Connor. We ask for your thoughts and prayers as we wait.

(END VIDEOTAPE) COSTELLO: Police in Modesto have said that Laci Petersen's husband, Scott, could not be ruled out as a suspect.
