ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: One of the many stories we have been following very closely in the last several hours, Scott Peterson in custody in California awaiting arraignment on Monday in the killing of his wife, Laci, and their baby boy, Conner (ph).
Let's turn to CNN's Mike Brooks, who spoke earlier this morning with the Modesto police chief -- Mike.

MIKE BROOKS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Anderson.

Yesterday afternoon, the California Department of Justice held a press conference and said that the remains that were pulled last Sunday and Monday from San Francisco Bay were identified through DNA as those of Laci Peterson, who had been missing from Modesto since December 24, and her unborn son, Conner.

Now, yesterday afternoon, it was learned that Scott Peterson, the husband of Laci, was arrested in San Diego, California, on Tory (ph) Pines Road, near the Tory Pines Golf Course, by the Modesto police. Apparently they had been following the Modesto police and other jurisdictions, other law enforcement agencies in California, had been following him for some time and knew his whereabouts and decided to go low, ahead, pull him over, and arrest him.

When we spoke with Chief Wasden of the Modesto Police Department earlier, he said that they did have enough evidence to arrest Scott even if they had not found the remains of Laci and her son.

Now, yesterday, Scott was booked into the Modesto -- to the Stanislaus County Jail here in Modesto at a little past midnight this morning. Now, when he was arrested, we looked at his picture, and you can see that he has lightened his hair and also had grown a beard. The last time we had seen Scott was back during the second search of their Modesto home in February. And he had started to grow a beard then, but he had very dark hair, and his beard was also dark.

Now, yesterday, during the press conference, law enforcement officials said that they were concerned that Scott may try to flee. So there is some thought that his change in appearance could he -- could have been altering his appearance with the possibility of possibly leaving the country. But -- because that was a definite concern of theirs yesterday, Anderson.

COOPER: All right, Mike Brooks, appreciate it, I know that you have been working all night and no doubt will be following this story all throughout the day. Appreciate you joining us with that update. Mike Brooks in Modesto.
