CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The major fighting in Iraq may be over, but there are still some smaller battles taking place. A Marine was wounded yesterday during a firefight in Mosul.
CNN's Jane Arraf is there and joins us live with an update.

Good morning -- Jane.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Carol.

It is still a bit volatile here, particularly when the sun goes down and people retreat to their homes, there is scattered gunfire. We've been hearing it here this morning even, on what looks like this idyllic scene behind on the banks of the Tigris River.

But inside the city, as we drove in, long lines of armored personnel carriers and Humvees carrying a very visible U.S. presence. Now, these were American troops who were streaming into the city, still not a whole lot of them, but they are making a point that they're definitely here. The lead vehicles in this convoy carried huge American flags. The people behind them all armed and ready for anything that might confront them, sending a message, really, that they are here in case there is trouble; they are here to prevent trouble.

So far, it hasn't been wildly successful. There aren't enough troops on the streets, really, to maintain order, and a lot of the local militias, the local tribes and the Kurdish factions are trying to do that themselves.

But one of the other things, Carol, they're struggling with is basically shortages of quite a lot of really essential things, huge lines for instance for gasoline stretching for what seemed to be miles this morning of cars waiting for gasoline that just isn't coming -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Many frustrations still. Jane Arraf reporting from Mosul this morning.
