CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Productive. That's how Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly describes the first day of meetings with North Korea. That's not to say there was any agreement to halt the country's nuclear program, but officials say it's a start.
We take you now live to Beijing and Jaime FlorCruz.

Good morning -- Jaime.

JAIME FLORCRUZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

The meeting will be productive, if they can come up with some more compromises. At the moment, the compromise has been to meet in Beijing in a trilateral format. Washington had insisted that they will only talk with North Korea in a multilateral format, whereas North Korea insisted that they will only talk with the U.S. one-on- one.

So the compromise has been a trilateral meeting. That's going on right now. It's probably not been that easy. Originally, we were told there would be a photo op this afternoon. Then they told us it's not going to happen; perhaps tomorrow.

But the Chinese hosts think that the mere fact that this happening is already progress. The Chinese hope that the nuclear standoff with North Korea can be resolved through diplomacy and political negotiations -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Understand. Jaime FlorCruz reporting live from Beijing this morning.
