KELLI ARENA, CNN ANCHOR: A tragic scene in Washington state, as two children are present at the horrifying family spectacle unfolds.
Angela King of CNN affiliate KCPQ reports.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANGELA KING, KCPQ NEWS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): You could see the shock in their eyes and hear the disbelief in their voices.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's too hard.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It happened so fast, nobody knew what was going on.

KING: It was here in this Gig Harbor parking lot where authorities say Tacoma police chief David Brame shot his wife in the head, then turned the gun on himself. The two were sitting in the wife's car. And their two young children had just taken a seat in their father's car.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The children were not in the car when the shooting happened. They were in close proximity in another vehicle and heard the shots. One of them fled the scene. And unfortunately, they were here when it occurred. And they know what has happened.

KING: The shooting comes just one day after Crystal Brame's allegations of abuse were publicized in the media. The couple had been going through a bitter divorce. According to court documents filed last month, Crystal Brame accused her husband of threatening her, saying he would point his service revolver at her, telling her "accidents happen." She then went on to say once she threatened him with divorce, he told her "he would kill me first before I would see any of his deferred compensation," an allegation the chief denied in court papers filed just three weeks ago.

But today, absolute shock in Gig Harbor.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It was more or less for keeping peace. And when something like this happens, what more can you say?

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ARENA: That was Angela King of CNN affiliate KCPQ. Thirty-five- year old Crystal Brame was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition with gunshot wound to the head.
