ARTHEL NEVILLE, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to go back now to check with our Jerrold Kessel. He has an update on the latest violence erupting in the Middle East.
Last night's and this morning's killings come on the heels of the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv and the delivery of the multinational road map to peace.

And, Jerrold, if you could just tell us the latest, please.

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Stormy situations still unfolding in Gaza in that eastern neighborhood of Gaza City, Arthel, in the neighborhood of Sajaiyah, where Israeli troops went in, in force, last night, apparently directed at getting the main stronghold of the Hamas militants in that area. And this led to a major firefight, and in the battles that erupted, Israel has killed seven Palestinians, some Palestinian sources say, including a 2-year-old toddler and a teenager. And the Israelis report six of their soldiers wounded in these ongoing clashes.

The clashes are focusing around a building now where several of the Hamas militants are said to be holed up.

Now, the Israeli media are reporting that this Israeli action, and a very sizable Israeli action, is linked to that suicide bombing in Tel Aviv the night before last, because it was Hamas, one of the two groups that claimed responsibility for that suicide bombing attack, in which three people were killed and 50 wounded.

The Hamas had dispatched, so say these media reports, from Sajaiyah the two bombers, both of whom were later described by Israeli police as being British citizens. The one man exploded himself at the entrance to the nightclub bar on the Tel Aviv Promenade. The other man, whose bomb belt malfunctioned, made good a getaway, and is being sought now in a major manhunt around Israel.

So, this violence certainly has provided a major bumpy start to the implementation, or the beginnings of the implementation, of that new peace map that was unfolded only yesterday. There were all smiles, hearty smiles, hearty handshakes when the members of the international quartet handed over the peace map -- the road map to peace to Abu Mazen, the new Palestinian prime minister, but already violence is center-road and continues to be so in the Israeli- Palestinian situation -- Arthel.

NEVILLE: OK, Jerrold Kessel, thank you very much for that report. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com.
