ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Don't know if you saw the race yesterday. Funny Cide won the 129th running of the Kentucky Derby and became the first New York bred horse to ever win the prestigious race. Kara Henderson has more now from Churchill Downs.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KARA HENDERSON, CNN SPORTS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A lot of people dream of getting together with some friends, buying a horse and then having that horse win the Kentucky Derby. Sounds a little far- fetched, but that's exactly what happened with Jack Knowlton, five of his high school friends and Funny Cide. Funny Cide is the first New York bred horse ever to win the Derby, first gelding to win since 1929 and jockey Jose Santos' 8-year-old son said it best, "wow."

JACK KNOWLTON, FUNNY CIDE'S OWNER: It was a thrill beyond belief, you know, as I said, we are the little guys in the game and for me it's just so rewarding that everybody who dreams of owning a horse or owns a horse or two or five horses can look at what we have accomplished.

BARCLAY TAGG, FUNNY CIDE'S TRAINER: So many things go wrong in this game all the time that to have everything go right week after week after week and it finally comes to this, why, it's just a -- it's just a blessing.

JOSE SANTOS, FUNNY CIDE'S JOCKEY: This is a very difficult race. Sometimes the best horse cannot win the race -- the Kentucky Derby, but today Funny Cide was the best horse in the race.

HENDERSON: For the trainer, Bobby Frankel, the Derby remains elusive. His favorite, Empire Maker, finishing second. The other horse he had in the race, Peace Rules, finishing third.

At Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky, I'm Kara Henderson.
