CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Some Democrats have an alternate plan to jump-start the economy. But is anyone listening? It's just one question our friends at Gallup Poll posed to America.
Editor-in-chief Frank Newport joins us live.
Good morning.
FRANK NEWPORT, GALLUP POLL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Good morning, Carol.
It's politics way ahead of time here some 18 months before the election. The debate between the Democrats was held last Saturday, and as you just mentioned, a lot of criticism, a lot of focus on the economy.
Our data shows that Lieberman is slightly ahead of the other Democratic candidates at this point, although it's really too early to tell if he has a commanding lead. As you mentioned, however, a lot of Democrats, looking at all of these nine candidates, aren't paying any attention whatsoever.
Here's a poll that we just picked up from the ABC News- "Washington Post" released over the weekend. Notice on the left-hand side there: very closely, these are Democrats mind you, only 8 percent; 29 percent somewhat closely; and then that huge percent of Democrats so far aren't paying any attention at all.
So, they may have been debating to themselves on Saturday -- Carol.
COSTELLO: Maybe so. Well, the Democrats are attacking Bush on the economy. Is that his weak point?
NEWPORT: Well, there is no question. You know, that's the art of war. You go for an opponent's weakness. Foreign international relations, security -- those are the kinds of things that Bush is doing well on. The economy is not where he has his great strength at this point.
The same thing for his father. We've spent a lot of time here saying, well, is Bush in better or worse position than Bush the elder when he came off of an Iraqi war?
Here's one indication, which we thought was interesting: Is the U.S. in a recession? Right now, 56 percent of Americans say yes, and that's bad news for the current Bush. But look at his father. It was 81 percent. This and some other indicators tell us, Carol, that Bush right now, Bush 43 so to speak, is not quite as bad off as his father was back in 1991.
COSTELLO: Interesting numbers. Frank Newport, many thanks to you.
