CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The Philippine president is getting special treatment today during a state visit to the White House, while Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, as we told you, postponed a planned visit.
For all of that and more, let's go to CNN senior White House correspondent, John King, live at the White House.

Good morning -- John.

JOHN KING, CNN SENIOR WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Carol.

If you like pomp and ceremony, a rare treat today here at the White House, President Gloria Arroyo of the Philippines due here for a state visit, a relatively rare occurrence in the Bush administration.

At 9:00 this morning, she'll be greeted on the South Lawn of the White House. The national anthems will be played. There will be cannon fire. The president will deliver remarks welcoming here.

Why such treatment for the president of the Philippines? Mr. Bush views President Arroyo as a key ally in the war on terrorism, and the Philippines is one of the success stories. President Arroyo has cracked down on the Abu Sayyaf terrorist movement and taken other steps to help the United States in the war on terrorism. So, she will get a state arrival ceremony today, Oval Office meetings with the president, and then a state dinner here at the White House tonight.

And we might hear from the president as to his thoughts, not only in the war on terrorism, but also on the situation with the Middle East bombings and his efforts to restart the peace plan, a news conference late this morning here at the White House with the Philippine president.

President Bush, of course, is being updated on the bombings. Officials are hoping to reschedule Prime Minister Sharon's visit within a matter of days. But make no mistake about it. They know this is a serious delay in the peace process. They're hoping it does not turn into a major setback. They are putting pressure on the new Palestinian prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas. They say he must prove that he can bring those terrorist groups, like Hamas, under control -- Carol.

COSTELLO: John King live from the White House this morning, many thanks.
