CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And while "The Matrix" ushered in a new era for box office numbers, the end of an era came on a Broadway stage in New York.
Jamie Colby was there for the end of "Les Miz."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JAMIE COLBY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The much beloved musical "Les Miz" closes on Broadway, a grand finale in grand style. Several hundred cast members from former performances are invited on stage to join the current Broadway cast. Producer Cameron Mackintosh says the final curtain marks the end of an era, but not the end of "Les Miz." The show will continue to tour, though not on Broadway. It's already been seen by 50 million theatergoers in 38 countries and been translated into 21 languages.

The adoption of the Victor Hugo novel spans three decades of French history. It's beat the odds, opening in 1987 in New York, and running for 16 years. "Les Miz" gained eight Tony Awards and made many a career and it's certainly made its mark in theatrical history.

Jamie Colby, CNN, on the great white way.
