CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Time to get more on that powerful earthquake that struck, killed more than 500 people, injured more than 4,000. The quake's epicenter was about 40 miles east of the capital Algiers.

IMAN MOYALDINE, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): With the death toll steadily climbing, rescue workers and local residents continue to search for many feared missing in the rubble following Algeria's most devastating earthquake in nearly two decades.

The 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday night, killing hundreds in Algiers and in towns east of the capital city. Several thousand people were injured in the quake. Many more remain trapped amid the collapsed rubble.

AHMED OUYAHIA, ALGERIAN PRIME MINISTER (through translator): What is worrying is that we still have a lot of people under the rubble. EMS, the army and the population are right now working in an admirable way, but this is still far from over.

MOYALDINE: Touring the scene of devastation and visiting the injured in area hospitals, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika assured victims that everything was being done to care for them and to search for missing loved ones.

Scores of people lined up at hospitals to donate blood, while others helped search for those trapped by collapsed structures and debris.

The epicenter of the earthquake near the towns of Benia (ph), Boumerdes and Rouiba east of the capital city Algiers left several buildings and homes destroyed, including one area hospital.

Iman Moyaldine, CNN.
