CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Annika Sorenstam it isn't, but one home improvement store is giving women a chance to feel the power. To be more precise, the power tools.
Our Jeanne Moos takes us on a power trip.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): If you think nails are something to be polished rather than hammered, if you wander aimlessly around home improvement stores unable to distinguish a nut from the washer, maybe what you need is a drill sergeant.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Push. Push it all the way. Use all your muscles.
MOOS: At over 1,500 Home Depots across the country, it was Do- It-Herself night.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Wait till my husband finds out.
MOOS: Finds out she's entered the mysterious world of power tools.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You hold that little thing and then the screw goes in and you say wow.
MOOS: From the power drill to the jigsaw...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: There you go.
MOOS: ... to the ever so intimidating...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Don't press any buttons yet.
MOOS: ... circular saw.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Is it held this way?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No,, no,. Hold it straight down.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Turn it on.
MOOS: A survey for Home Depot shows that 69 percent of women want to improve their home improvement skills. Wouldn't it be nice to be like Home Depot's Marlene Pratt?
MARLENE PRATT: Yes, I can build a house from the ground up. I'm not that great of a cook, but I can build a house from the ground up.
MOOS: The first tip involved fingertips.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Watch your fingers.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Watch your finger.
MOOS: It's enough to give you gray hair, unless you already have it.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Beautiful. That's nice.
MOOS: Gerry Senior proclaimed the power drill easier than expected. But when she got to the circular saw...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That was kind of new. I was a little frightened on that.
MOOS: But there were no injuries, no Texas chain saw massacres. If power tools aren't your thing...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Tonight you're going to learn how to put a patio down.
MOOS: Here at Home Depot, the do-it-herselfers start young.
(on camera): Did you ever build anything before?
UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: A box.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Go ahead, start this off.
MOOS (voice-over): Get out the goggles...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: If you have long hair, tie your hair behind your back.
MOOS: These women weren't just introduced, they were seduced by power tools.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's powerful!
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Every tool known to man -- now to women.
MOOS: Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
