CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: An extradition hearing is set this morning for the suspect in the Louisiana serial killer case.
As CNN's Ed Lavandera reports, the suspect was tracked down three states away.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ED LAVANDERA, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A team of investigators in Atlanta, Georgia found Derrick Todd Lee hiding behind a tire shop in the southwest part of town shortly before nine o'clock Eastern Time Tuesday evening. Authorities say Lee was alone, appeared somber and didn't say very much when he was arrested. Relatives of Lee suggested to authorities that they focus their search on Atlanta. They say that he knew several people there and perhaps that's where he might have been hiding.

In fact, there were two occasions where authorities slightly missed Lee, once at a homeless shelter and once at the hotel in the south part of Atlanta.

Authorities say he had identification on him, didn't say very much and was arrested without incident.

CHIEF RICHARD PENNINGTON, ATLANTA POLICE: We can only surmise our theorize that he probably was still running. He know that we were looking for him. Once his photograph went on the news media, throughout the news media, he knew that he was a wanted person in this area, this metropolitan area, and we were going to work extremely hard until we apprehended him.

LAVANDERA: If Derrick Todd Lee waives his right to extradition, he could be back in Baton Rouge by Wednesday afternoon. If he does not waive that right, that process could take a little bit longer. But authorities here don't seem terribly worried by that. There is another series of press conferences scheduled for later Wednesday morning and perhaps, more information about this process will be released then.

Ed Lavandera, CNN, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
