CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We should know by Friday if key documents in the Laci Peterson murder investigation will remain sealed.
As CNN's David Mattingly reports, those papers have brought opposing sides together.

DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Both sides in the Scott Peterson case were in unusual agreement in the courtroom on Tuesday over the issue of whether or not to make public some important documents regarding, first of all, the autopsy of Laci Peterson's body; also, some search warrants that have been issued in the case.

Neither prosecutors nor Scott Peterson's defense attorneys want that to happen and that's what they argued to the judge behind closed doors. The judge emerged apparently in agreement, saying that will probably not happen. He also expressed concern about all the pretrial publicity that this case has attracted. The judge says a gag order might be necessary. There will also be some discussion about the future of the camera in the courtroom.

Tuesday, that camera gave us our first look at Scott Peterson's new appearance. He was in a coat and tie and with a haircut that got rid of all the blonde highlights he had when he was arrested. Whether or not that camera stays in the courtroom will be decided, along with other issues, prior to a preliminary hearing, which has been set for a month and a half away.

David Mattingly, CNN, Modesto, California.
