CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And we begin this hour of DAYBREAK with more deadly trouble for U.S. troops in Iraq. U.S. Central Command says a U.S. soldier was killed by hostile fire northwest of Baghdad just a few hours ago.
We take you live to Baghdad now to check in with CNN's Matthew Chance -- what happened this time, Matthew?

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Carol, it was another incident really underscoring just how dangerous and uncertain the security situation is for U.S. troops as they patrol areas, towns and cities across this country. We'll bring you the latest details we have on that.

According to CENTCOM, a U.S. soldier was killed by hostile fire while traveling on a main supply route in Iraq today. The exact location has not been given to us. The soldier was evacuated to the 21st Combat Support Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The soldier's name and unit are being withheld at this stage pending notification of his relatives.

But, you know, the killing brings to five the number of U.S. soldiers that have been killed in hostile action across Iraq in the past week alone. Two were killed a few days ago in the town of Fallujah, about 45 miles or so to the west of Baghdad. Another, in another incident on the outskirts of Baghdad, a U.S. Army Humvee armored jeep was blown up by a land mine or a satchel bomb that was thrown underneath it.

So clearly there are very many loyalists out there and opponents to U.S. forces in this country who are out there ready, willing and able to strike -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Matthew Chance bringing us up to date live from Baghdad.

Many thanks.
