CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: As the president is heading home from the region, another U.S. soldier has been killed in Iraq. We just got word it happened in Fallujah. That's west of Baghdad. Apparently, someone fired a rocket-propelled grenade and hit their target.
We take you live to Baghdad now for an update from Jane Arraf.

Have you been able to find out anything else about this attack -- Jane?

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: The attack happened early this morning just after 1:00 a.m. local time. One soldier killed and five others wounded when someone apparently from the town opened fire with a rocket-propelled grenade.

Now, Fallujah, which is about 45 miles west of Baghdad, has been the scene of fairly intense trouble for the past month. It was the place where U.S. soldiers opened fire on demonstrators in April, killing more than a dozen of them. And ever since then, it has been a severe trouble spot.

The 3rd Infantry Division, which had been due to go home back to the United States, had been sent there in the last few days to try to quell the violence. Now, this unit was the first in Baghdad, and they're expected to stay there for several weeks until Fallujah calms down, if it does. It's still a major trouble spot for U.S. soldiers trying to recreate and keep the peace here in Iraq.

Jane Arraf, CNN, reporting from Baghdad.
