Tragedy Takes Life of Would-be Rescuer

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A tragic scene in Newport, Oregon as an ocean rescue went terribly wrong.
We get the story from Veronica Griffin of CNN affiliate KPTV.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

VERONICA GRIFFIN, KPTV CORRESPONDENT: A father and son jumped into the cold water off Nye Beach near Newport to save two young girls. The son died in his efforts. Around 3:00 p.m., two girlfriends, we're told, ages eight and 10, got into some trouble while swimming at Jump Off Joe (ph), near Nye Beach. They screamed for help.

Two good Samaritans, a father and his 21-year-old son, jumped in to help. The tide proved to be a bit much for all four. Some 30 rescue crews worked the scene. All the victims were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for hypothermia. The 21-year-old good Samaritan was pronounced dead at the hospital.

We're told the water in the immediate area was about nine feet deep and 58 degrees.
