FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Up first here on CNN, U.S. troops under fire in Iraq. Military officials say a soldier was killed at a checkpoint in western Iraq. And skirmishes continue in the Muslim stronghold of Fallujah. We'll get the latest on the violence in Iraq from CNN's Matthew Chance in Baghdad -- Matthew.
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thank you very much, Fredricka.

U.S. forces attempting to impose security across Iraq, facing more difficulties and indeed more attacks. In the latest incident, another U.S. Soldier was killed up in the northeast of the country, near the Syrian border, at a U.S. Army checkpoint. A car filled with passengers pulled up to that checkpoint asking for medical help. One of the U.S. soldiers came along to give that assistance to see what was wrong. Pistols came out, and were shot at the man, the soldier, killing that soldier.

So a lot of incidents underlying how dangerous it still is for U.S. forces here -- Fredricka.

WHITFIELD: All right, Matthew, thank you very much.
