CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The suspect in the kidnapping of a 9-year-old California girl goes to court tomorrow. Police say he sexually attacked the girl and held her not far from her home.
Sue Kwon of our San Francisco affiliate KPIX reports the girl helped police track down the suspect.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SUE KWON, KPIX CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A small group of neighbors gathered to celebrate the ending all had hoped for. The missing girl is safe with family and the suspected kidnapper, David Montiel Cruz, is behind bars.

CHIEF BILL LANSDOWNE, SAN JOSE POLICE: He did have the vehicle that we were looking for. He matches the description and the physical injuries that he has on his person match the circumstances of this situation. We're very confident it's the right person.

KWON: The girl's mother, wearing bruises from a struggle with the intruder, thanked the police and the community for their help. A neighbor's surveillance camera captured the suspect speeding away with her daughter Friday afternoon. Perhaps feeling pressured by the intense publicity, he dropped her off near Isa Yasim's East Palo Alto convenience store Sunday night.

ISA YASIM, STORE OWNER: I asked her, "How old are you?" She said, "Nine." So right away I figured out she's the one missing from San Jose. And after that I dialed 911.

KWON: Police credit the child for the suspect's quick arrest. She remembered he had a pepperoni pizza delivered Saturday night from Little Caesar's. A check of the restaurant's computer records confirmed a delivery made to an address on Deer Well Way (ph), less than a mile from where she was kidnapped.

LAMAR COX, LITTLE CAESAR'S PIZZA: The odd thing is that actually we were passing out the fliers with our deliveries. So, I mean I handed him the flier saying that, you know, this little girl was missing.

KWON: The girl is safe with family and police are looking for a reason why she was targeted.

DEPUTY CHIEF ROB DAVIS, SAN JOSE POLICE: There is a link through the children. The victim has a friend who is related to somebody who knows the suspect. (END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: That report from Sue Kwan of our San Francisco affiliate KPIX.
