BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Back to Baghdad again, Daryn. The violence again continues on both sides. CNN is now confirming that U.S. soldiers have opened fire, killing two Iraqis in a crowd of protesters swarming near a coalition base there; also news again in the past few minutes that a U.S. soldier has been shot as well.
Jane Arraf on top of all of it now live in Baghdad.

Jane -- again, another violent day there today on the streets of the Iraqi capital.

JANE ARRAF, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: It certainly is in some places, Bill.

The U.S. military has just confirmed to us that one American soldier from the 1st Armored Division has been shot dead and another one wounded. This occurred near a gasoline station in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Baghdad, the neighborhood called Dora (ph).

Now, according to witnesses there, the witnesses tell us that an unidentified gunman walked by and opened fire on the soldiers. They appeared to be guarding the petro of the gasoline station.

Again, one U.S. soldier dead, another one wounded.

And that followed that deadly incident at the palace, the palace occupied by American forces and coalition forces, where a demonstration of former army officers turned violent. Now, the officers and lower noncommissioned officers, some of them started throwing stones apparently at a convoy. One of the vehicles had a guard on it that opened a fire into the crowd, while the rest fired warning shots across the street.

At least two people were injured and taken away. Some reports unconfirmed as of yet say that they have died. What we know from the U.S. military is that they were taken and treated, shortly after they were shot, at a U.S. military hospital. No word yet on their condition.

But certainly the anger continues. These are soldiers who were disbanded. The army no longer exists, and they were promised payments. They said they have not been paid -- Bill

HEMMER: Jane Arraf in Baghdad. We have seen protests just about every day, but this one, again, getting out of hand today in Iraq. More on this later in the morning.
