CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: I know it's early, but we're going to talk about that diet you're on right now, because it may not be very good for you.
Registered dietician Lisa Drayer of dietwatch.com joins us live from New York to talk about diet warnings. Tell us, Lisa.

LISA DRAYER, NUTRITIONIST: That's right, a lot of times we go on a diet, but it might not be the most healthful choice. For example, a lot of times we don't have a lot of energy, we feel tired, especially during a workout, it could be because we're eating too few carbohydrates. Carbs are necessary to maintain normal blood sugar levels. They're also the primary source of fuel for our muscles, so very important for those workouts.

COSTELLO: Gotcha. Well, what if you have, like, difficulty concentrating?

DRAYER: That's right. You know, in fact, it could be because your iron stores are low. Research has shown that adults have a decreased attention span and difficulty concentrating when the stores are low, and this is before you're necessarily officially anemic. So, just be careful. If you're following a restricted diet, it can be too low in iron and you may need a supplement.

COSTELLO: OK, this one: What if you have red, dry, scaly skin on your face?

DRAYER: Right. It may be due to stress, but it may also be due to your diet. A case of dermatitis, which is characterized by red, dry, scaly skin, can be due to too little fat in the diet, specifically a fat known as linoleic acid found in vegetable oils and nuts and wheat germ. It can also cause eczema...

COSTELLO: Interesting.

DRAYER: ... if you have don't have enough.

COSTELLO: Yes. Bloating and gas.

DRAYER: That's right. You know all of those low-carb products?

COSTELLO: Yes.

DRAYER: They don't have carbs, but they have sugar alcohols in them, like the Atkins chocolate candies and the sugar-free gums. They don't necessarily provide a lot of calories, but they go to the large intestine, where they get fermented by bacteria. It can cause bloating, gas and even diarrhea.

COSTELLO: Oh, that's just sickening to talk about this early in this morning, but thank you for that, Lisa. Brittle hair.

DRAYER: Right. Brittle, dry hair or even a loss of hair could be due to the fact that we're not getting enough protein in the diet. Protein contains Vitamin B12, zinc and iron, very important for maintaining a healthy blood supply to the hair.

COSTELLO: All right, Lisa Drayer, many thanks. So, I guess eat a well-balanced meal, and you'll be just fine.

DRAYER: Or take a multi if you are on a diet.

COSTELLO: And exercise.

DRAYER: That, too.

COSTELLO: Thank you, Lisa. We appreciate it.

DRAYER: Thank you.
