CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: What happens in the Middle East today will be watched very closely by President Bush. But what's the next step?
Live to the White House now and Suzanne Malveaux.
Good morning -- Suzanne.
SUZANNE MALVEAUX, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.
Well, you may have noticed that Secretary Powell's language was very measured and very balanced. He talked about violence impacting both Israelis and Palestinians. But he also praised the Palestinian leadership, at the same time pushing the Palestinian prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, saying that more must be done.
The main message here from the White House is that this cannot be done alone. It cannot be done in a vacuum. That's why earlier in the week President Bush called the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, to make the point that Arab leaders need to get more involved, that they have to give Abbas the kind of support that he needs to get that security system in place.
That is also why we are going to see Secretary Powell later in the week and in the weekend meeting with other members of the quartet, the European Union, the United Nations, as well as Russia, to emphasize that this is something that is going to involve the European community as well as the Arab community to make this happen -- Carol.
COSTELLO: Suzanne Malveaux live from the White House this morning, many thanks.
