CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Most people buy eyeglasses so they can see better; but these days, being seen is almost as important. And for some in New York, the more outlandish the glasses the better.
CNN's Jeanne Moos takes a look.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Spectacles have become a spectacle whether worn by Dame Edna or the editor of Vogue. And Elton John doesn't even need glasses anymore, he had laser eye surgery, but he still wears them.

If this is the image you want to project in the eye of the beholder,...

(on camera): R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S, ridiculous.

(voice-over): ... have we got a store for you. Artsy (ph) makes chain stores seem like eyesores.

JULIO SANTIAGO (ph), ARTSY: I mean this is not practical. I mean come on.

MOOS: Artsy's co-owner, Julio Santiago, has two kinds of glasses, the type collectors eye and the kind most customers buy. His collector pieces include this 1950's frame design so you can apply eye makeup while still looking through the other lens. And this pair from the outrageous '80s...

SANTIAGO: Just be silly.

MOOS: ... had a role in the movie "Mannequin." Before you snicker,...

(on camera): ... $5,000 for this?

SANTIAGO: Yes, and up.

MOOS (voice-over): From Gbonshe (ph) to 1960s Puchie (ph), some folks are eyewear obsessed.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I have 32 pairs of these in different colors.

MOOS: Not too long ago, "Saturday Night Live" spoofed trendy eyewear. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: These are called Cyclopses.

MOOS (on camera): Do you have a Cyclopeses?

SANTIAGO: No.

MOOS (voice-over): But Artsy does have the ones Adrien Brody was wearing.

(on camera): Was it exactly these?

(voice-over): Note the divided lenses worn by the optician in this skit.

SANTIAGO: This is for people that can't get used to invisible bifocals. It's four lenses.

MOOS: What's one of the most requested looks at Artsy?

SANTIAGO: Do you have anything big like Jackie Onassis?

MOOS: Julio actually has prototype frames designer Oleg Cassini made for Jackie.

SANTIAGO: These was on her face many times.

MOOS (on camera): This -- these -- this actual pair was on her?

SANTIAGO: Yes.

MOOS (voice-over): And though at Artsy you won't see...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sight stick by La Flange (ph).

MOOS: They do carry the Belgium designer Taiyo (ph).

(on camera): I mean they look of those cardboard 3D glasses, only these must be about 400 bucks.

SANTIAGO: They're a little bit more than that.

MOOS (voice-over): Try $575. There's a Japanese line inspired by butterflies that fold into a cocoon like case. And for $525, you can have these titanium frames.

(on camera): Do you want to try them?

(voice-over): OK, it's a mask. It won't improve your eyesight, but you will be quite the vision.

SANTIAGO: Perfect, how would you like to pay?

MOOS: Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
