KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to go to Pentagon correspondent Jamie McIntyre, some breaking news out of Iraq concerning special forces.
What do you know, Jamie?

JAMIE MCINTYRE, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Well, very little.

The U.S. Central Command says a U.S. special operations soldier has been killed southwest of Baghdad in what appears to be a hostile incident. Also, eight other special operation forces wounded in that operation. The fact that this involves special operations troops would indicate that it was likely an offensive operation conducted by the United States, rather than a situation where soldiers would have been attacked.

Special operation troops are spearheading the hunt for Saddam Hussein, his two sons and other senior Iraqi leaders conducting operations across Iraq. Again, the only word we have from the U.S. Central Command we have at this point is that one special operations soldier has been killed, eight others wounded in hostile fire incident southwest of the capital of Baghdad.

Again, task force 20 is the special operations unit, which is heading up the hunt for those senior regime leaders, and U.S. military commanders have pointed out that although there have been a number of U.S. soldiers killed and wounded, many of those have actually come from offensive operations in which the United States is trying to root out the remnants of Saddam Hussein's regime and neutralize other Anti- American forces -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, Jamie McIntyre following that story from the Pentagon. We'll continue to check in with you as you get more information. Thanks, Jamie.
